Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., received an honorary degree at Southern New Hampshire University’s Commencement on Saturday, May 19, at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

The senator, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for president, encouraged the group of about 1,000 graduates to take risks, resist the "money culture," care for others and work for the collective good.

"You will be tested by the challenges of this new century, and at times you will fail," he said in his remarks to graduates. "But know that you have it within your power to try. That generations who have come before you faced these same fears and uncertainties in their own time. And that if we’re willing to shoulder each other’s burdens, to take great risks and to persevere through trial, America will continue its journey towards that distant horizon, and a better day."

Obama received an honorary Doctor of Laws, as did SNHU President Emeritus Richard A. Gustafson and former President Edward Shapiro.

Current university President Paul LeBlanc praised graduates for their accomplishments. He also noted that SNHU has a responsibility to model best practices for sustainability and announced that the university is becoming carbon-neutral through a unique renewable energy hedge agreement. "It"s good for the environment, good for the renewable energy industry and it makes good business sense," he said.
